Use this method to add a single student to a class, for example, if a new student joins mid-term. If you need to add multiple students at once, the spreadsheet import is more efficient. See: How do I import students using a spreadsheet?
Tip: If you need to add several students at once, you may find it quicker to share a class join link and let students create their own accounts. See: How do I invite students using a class join link?
From a class
Step 1: Go to the Classes page
Select Classes from the user menu (where you see your name in the header bar).
Step 2: Open the class
Find the class you want to add the student to and click Open class.
Step 3: Click "Add student"
Click the Add student button in the top right of the class view.
Step 4: Search for an existing student or create a new one
You'll be asked to search for the student by name or email first. This checks whether the student already has a Dr Frost Maths account at your school.
- If the student already has an account, select them from the search results and they'll be added to the class immediately. See also: A student already has a Dr Frost account from another school. How do I add them to my class?
- If the student is new, click Create a new student account to continue.
Step 5: Enter the student's email address and choose a login setup method
Enter the student's email address. The UI will confirm whether the address is available before you proceed.
You'll also need to select a Login setup method from the dropdown. This determines how the student will get started with their account:
Single Sign-On (SSO) with Google or Microsoft
Choose this if the email address matches a school Google or Microsoft account. The student can log straight in using SSO with no password setup required. The email address must match a school Google or Microsoft account for this to work.
Send an email with a link
Dr Frost will send the student an email with a secure link to set up their login method. Choose this only if the student's email address can receive emails from noreply@drfrost.org — for example, check that school email filtering won't block it.
Generate a temporary password
A temporary password will be generated and shown to you on screen. You'll need to share this with the student securely so they can log in and set up their own login method.
If the student doesn’t have a school email address, click Continue without email address — a username and temporary password will be generated instead.
Step 6: Enter the student's name and add them
Once you click Continue, you'll see the Details step. Enter the student's first and last name. The class field will be pre-filled if you started the process from within a class, but you can adjust this or add the student to additional classes here. Click Add student to complete.
What happens next?
If you chose SSO: The account is created immediately. The student can go straight to the login page and sign in using Login with Google or Login with Microsoft with their matching school email address. No password setup is required.
If you chose Send an email with a link: Dr Frost will send the student an email with a secure link to set up their login method. The confirmation screen will show whether the message was sent and delivered. If delivery can't be confirmed as shown in the example below, check with the student whether they received it. If not, you can go to their account and use Reset login to generate a temporary password instead.
If you chose Generate a temporary password: The confirmation screen will show the student's email address and their temporary password. Click the eye icon to reveal the password, then copy it or make a note of it to share with the student.
Note: You will not be able to view this password again after closing this screen. If the student needs a new password later, you can reset their login to generate a new temporary one. See: How do I reset a student's login?
If you continued without an email address: A username and temporary password will be generated and shown on the confirmation screen. Make a note of both to share with the student.
Note: You will not be able to view this password again on screen, but you can retrieve it later by downloading your class list. See: How do I download a list of student usernames and passwords?.
If the student needs a new password, you can also reset their login. See: How do I reset a student's login?
From the Students screen
You can also add a student without starting from a specific class. This is useful if you want to create the account first and assign the class later.
Select your name in the header bar, go to Settings, then select Students from the left-hand menu. Click Add student and follow the same steps above. You can assign the student to a class during the process or come back and do it later.
