What is mastery?
Every student has a mastery value between 0 and 100 for each skill. This value increases as they answer questions correctly and decreases when they answer questions incorrectly.
To increase their mastery beyond certain thresholds, students must answer increasingly difficult questions within a skill. The thresholds are:
- 1 bar (orange) - mastery of at least 25
- 2 bars (green) - mastery of at least 50
- 3 bars (purple) - mastery of at least 85
For example, if a skill contains questions with difficulty levels from 1 to 4, then by answering only difficulty 1 questions, a student can reach a maximum mastery of 25. Difficulty 2 questions allow mastery up to 50, and so on.
Mastery only goes down if students get an easier question wrong relative to their current mastery level. For example, if a student has a mastery of 20/100 and answers a difficulty 4 question incorrectly, their mastery will not decrease.
In addition to mastery values for individual skills, each student also has cumulative mastery values for every course, module, and unit, as well as an overall mastery value. These are calculated by adding together the mastery values of each skill within that unit, module, course, or every skill.
What are points?
Students have a total points score. They earn points by answering questions. Each question they answer is worth 2-5 points, depending on difficulty.
Where can I see the mastery and points for each student?
Go to the Menu in the top left and select Progress Data.
From the options on the left, select Student Progress. Use the blue drop down filter to view data for an individual student, a class, or multiple classes. The page will display cumulative statistics for your selected group (or individual).
To see the mastery and points for each student, change the Cumulative dropdown to By Individual.
To view mastery by course, select By Course. The values shown are each student's cumulative mastery for the courses, modules, and units displayed. You can use the filters to focus on specific modules or units.
Where do students see their mastery and points?
Students can see information about their mastery and points in the top right corner of their dashboard.
The mastery numbers show how many skills the student has achieved each mastery level for. For example, the student below has 3 skills at the orange level (mastery of at least 25) and no skills at the green or purple levels (mastery of at least 50 and 85 respectively).
Students can also view their mastery for individual skills by navigating to a couse. The course displays their RECENT ACCURACY for each subskill, as well as their mastery for that skill overall.
